Own a piece of current history in the making!

Boston Family Boatbuilding is offering 15 of these beautiful, 10 foot, traditionally crafted rowing dinghies for sale.  Each boat is built by a team of Boston students under the tutelage of several master shipwrights. When you purchase one of these great boats, you are not only procuring a smart traditional dinghy to carry you to your yacht, you are also supporting the Boston Family Boatbuilding project, investing in a better education paradigm, and sustainable lumber practices.  Priced at a competative $1,500.

The boats are carvel planked in cedar on a white oak backbone with a fir plywood bottom. All materials are sourced from sustainably managed forests by certified loggers and milled in certified facilities. Cedar is from Dover-Foxcroft Maine, White oak from Orange Mass and fir plywood is produced by Roseburg in the western US. Silicone bronze fastened.

Design inspired by Nat Benjamin, of Gannon and Benjamin. Construction techniques are very traditional. Planking is cotton caulked.

Sikaflex is applied between planking and chine log and when applying the bottom.

Boston Family Boat Building brings critical academic subjects and skills -- math, science, social studies, spatial thinking, reading and writing -- to life with experiential learning opportunities for school children. It is a unique program serving Boston Public Schools elementary school children that draws on the outstanding natural features of Boston and its rich history. Now in its third year, the program works with 4th and 5th graders to learn navigation skills in the Harbor, construct a seaworthy 10-foot wooden rowing vessel and learn about earlier Bostonians, particularly African Americans, who worked in the maritime trades. See their programs designed to bring exciting experiential learning opportunities to students of the Boston Public Schools at their web site:  www.bostonfamilyboatbuilding.com

Boston Family Boatbuilding invites you to visit,  pitch in, or just to take a look.  The shop is open Thursdays from 4-8PM and Saturdays from 10AM-2PM.   Staff will be on hand to organize whoever wants to stop by to work. This is a great opportunity for all anyone who has fantasized about building a boat, but lacked the time, or space. Having others to work with, experienced staff to teach you what you need to know and the beautiful shop space in Building 125 at the Charlestown Navy Yard to work in will make it seem easy, and fun!

How does the charter/sale arrangement work?

Most boats can be purchased for their current appraised value or chartered on a long term basis (minimum three years) with an option to purchase. The purchase price of chartered vessels is usually established at the beginning of the lease and reflects the anticipated market value of the boat three years hence. If a charterer elects to exercise the option and purchase the vessel at the end of the charter, all charter payments are credited against the agreed upon purchase price. There are no interest charges or financing fees, etc. The charterer may also choose not to exercise his or her purchase option, in which case the security deposit will be returned.  Charter payments will be kept as charter hire. Broker commissions are generally paid in full at the commencement of the charter. For more information, please contact us by email or call us at (401) 842-0752.
